Genderswap is one of my favorite fic cliches. I prefer "alternate universe, always the opposite gender" to stories where a characters gets hit with a Ranma plot device, because it lets you really think about the character and what's at their core. Whether you believe that men and women are just intrinsically different or not, the people around them certainly have different expectations for them based on their gender, and it's not unreasonable to think that a character raised with different expectations might be a little bit different for that reason. People also sometimes have really different preferences in character traits (what's charming in a guy might be seen as slutty in a girl, what's cute and spunky in a girl might be seen as annoying in a guy, etc.), and trying to translate a character so that the audience reacts to them in a similar way is also a fun 201-level exercise for the genderswap writer.

One of my friends and I have an ongoing saga about the adventures of a female version of the main characters from our favorite book series, and today we were discussing whether it was possible to turn that character into something that wasn't a cliche or not. I hold out hope, but he is skeptical.

Now, I'm wondering: What do you think a genderswapped, always-a-girl version of Napoleon would be like? What about Illya?

(Yes, I've written about that...but I'm thinking of expanding it, and I'm toying with a lot of different ideas, so I'm interested in seeing what people think and why.)
