Does it matter if new people like or have seen the original show?

This question has probably been posed before but I have been thinking about it for a while now. I love Sherlock the bbc series and read a lot of fanfic based in its verse, but I have asbolutely no interest in reading ACD Sherlock stories. The sum of my knowledge comes from Basil Rathbourne movies tbh. I will profess to loving the RDJ Holmes as well (for the sheer madness). I remember when BBC Sherlock came out, there was a lot of derision in the fan community between the "interlopers" and the ACD purists. Of course BBC Sherlock became an utter juggernaught and the fandom somewhat split.

So my question is ... do you think it's important that new fans know about the original series or is a divergent canon completely acceptable to you?
