When did the US forget Mothering Sunday?

You've celebrated Mother's Day and there have been links to stories about how it was invented, but when did you forget the original Mothering Sunday? The UK has always celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent. We have no stories of how it started, it's always been then, like Valentine's day has always been in February.

And it can't be Catholic because the anti-papist feelings of the 17th and 18th centuries would have got rid of it if that had been the case. In fact putting it in May is much more Catholic with it being Our Lady's month.

It's puzzling.
