One from the vault

Illyushadarling asked back in 2009

But since I've wandered back into the MfU fandom, I have repeatedly seen two forms of Illya's patronymic: Nickovetch and Nicholaievitch (this with some variation in spelling). Being the curious soul I am, this of course raises questions... How did this... discrepancy in patronymic come about, what sources are fans using to support their own choice, etc.

I'm not looking for a right/wrong answer here, and do hope I've not touched on a sensitive topic. I'm quite sure everyone here who has a firm opinion about Illya's patronymic is just as convinced of being right as I am. But I'd love to hear what you think, and why you think it.

What say you, cousin?
