A question for the Americans here.

I think I have an idea of how a president is elected (everybody votes, it's counted by state, and then the states are counted, weighted for size) but the primaries have never intruded before.

I read the wiki page on primaries and so have an idea of the mechanics, but it's all so different from the situation in the UK. So my question is, if Trump continues to win in the primaries is the Republican party forced to put him forward as their candidate even if the party hierarchy don't think he has a chance in the real election?
