A writing question

So, a question for writers and readers alike – how honest are you when you do review? This was a topic that was bashed around during the con – if someone asks for your honest opinion (one is assuming with regards to writing), do they mean it or do they just want praise? Do you find yourself pulling away from potential writers because they represent a vision of MFU (or any other fandom) that doesn’t agree with yours and you know any suggestions will be met with open hostility or condescension?

And if you do give them carefully word, but honest criticism, how did they respond? With appreciation or a screaming fit? The con opinion was that few writers today, especially the new writers, want to hear the bad stuff. They don’t want to be corrected, edited or have even a hint that something might be off, they just want to be praised for managing to spell the guys’ names right. I’m just curious if that was just a ‘con’ thought or something that others have noticed as a growing trend as to why zines are in a decline.
