Just wondering

In the book we are currently reading (The Copenhagen Affair), the author keeps referring to Solo and Illya.

My question, why? For the sake of brevity because Napoleon and Illya or Solo and Kuryakin are too long? To make Illya seem less Russian? Anyone got an idea?
